White Stone, Green Water, an Ancient Place

Some landscapes are built though no hand ever touched them. The Calanques are one of these. White limestone set upright in water that runs first green, then turquoise. Leave Marseille behind and you step into a room of rock, light and salt. We read places through their material, and here the stone is the whole story.

The rock as a wall

Limestone, nothing more, and yet it carries everything. Over millennia the water has cut it, smooth in places, rough in others, with a patina of sun and salt. It is the same honesty we love in a lime wall. Nothing pretends to be anything, the stone is simply there, warm under your hand.

Light you could almost touch

In the morning the light stands high and makes the water clear, in the afternoon it lies soft on the rock and turns it honey-coloured. Bring little, a linen cloth, fruit, bread from the market. The Calanques are a protected park, there are no kiosks, and that is a good thing. The place asks you to come quietly.

In from Marseille

On foot from Callelongue you walk straight into it, cove after cove, as far as Sormiou and Morgiou. If you want to go further, drive to Cassis and take the boat or the trail to En-Vau, the narrowest and stillest. From the apartment the trailhead is under an hour away.

What stays when you come back

Back in Marseille, under a cool shower, you still have the stone in your hands, its warmth, its grain. That is how materials work, they stay. A good room does the same, it leaves a trace long after you have gone.
